Edward Yang’s last feature film and the finale of his New Taipei Trilogy, Yi Yi is a beautiful, intimate look at a multi-generational Taiwanese family as they come to terms with their personal dilemmas: their dreams, expectations and realities weaving together in thoughtful alchemy.

  • Edward Yang is one of the world’s premier directors, winning and being nominated for many awards over the last 20 years. His first foray into filmmaking, as screenwriter for THE WINTER OF 1905, was an Official Selection out of Competition in Cannes. His first feature film as writer/director, THAT DAY – ON THE BEACH, won the Best Film, Director and Screenplay awards at the Taipei Critics Awards, as well as the Gold award at the Houston International Film Festival. TAIPEI STORY, his follow-up film, won the Fipresci prize at the Locarno Film festival of 1985. He returned in 1986 with THE TERRORISOR, a film that was an Official Selection out of Competition in Cannes, as well as a Grand Jury Prize winner at the Locarno Film Festival.

    After an absence of five years he made A BRIGHTER SUMMER DAY and scooped the Grand Jury and Fipresci prizes at the Tokyo Film Festival in 1991. He returned to Cannes in 1994 with A CONFUCIAN CONFUSION,an Official Selection in Competition. His next film, MAHJONG, was shown at the Berlin Film Festival in 1996 and won the Special Jury Prize.
